Walls to the adjacent bedrooms are brought down to create a continuous space. Once down, the contractor strategizes on what goes where to ensure they do not interfere with the house’s stability. Adding a master suite to your split-level home is one of the best things you can do. Besides, a master suite addition will provide you with a separate bathroom and walk-in closet, as well as many multifunctional spaces around the room. Extending the long dimension of a split-level home is part architectural nightmare, and generally a disaster in terms of curb appeal.
The split-level home, despite its diminished popularity, has a charm and practicality that endures even to this day. And don’t color us surprised if the split-level home sees another Renaissance in the near future. In fact, even experienced architects and home designers are likely to feel stumped when faced with such a difficult undertaking. After all, the split-level home’s staggered design, while convenient, presents a wide range of design challenges. Do you own a split-level house and feel it is time to make some improvements? I know the feeling can be scary, especially when your house design is unique.
How Do You Know Your House is a Split-Level?
Make sure to prioritize and choose your options based on the requirements. Before finalizing the addition plan to a split-level house, consult with an expert. A split-level home is a multi-layered construction with a series of stairs connecting the interior structure and living rooms. There is no common ground here, and all of the living rooms are on various floors of the home. Let’s suppose you found a photo album of a nice neighborhood of cozy 3-level homes circa 1954 to 1970. The landscaping is young, trees may be small and scrawny, but the houses fit the contours perfectly.

Many see this design as being very impractical, considering all the stairs you have to climb in order to access various areas of the home. For example, the laundry room will most likely be on a different floor than the bedrooms and bathrooms. This means you’ll have to climb multiple stairs in order to do your laundry in your own home. The first staircase that leads downwards goes to either the basement or some other type of informal living space.
It adds more value to your property:
I had two bathrooms I wanted remodeled, both required moving a wall and lots of plumbing changes. Relocating our kitchen and removing a couple of walls in the living room to create an open concept, was on our list for a very long time. Matt and his crew at Element Home Remodeling were great to work with. I'd say they were one of the best contractors I've worked with in terms of taking the time to understand my vision, being responsive, and staying on schedule. They handled all the permits, inspections, etc. and made sure the job was done right. I'd definitely hire them again and would recommend them to everyone.
Here you’ll typically find the living room, dining room, kitchen, and possibly a bathroom. Meanwhile, the topmost level is where all of the bedrooms and bathrooms are. Whether you’re looking to buy or build a home from scratch, you likely have a specific architectural style in mind.
Plan 2861
Consider the overall theme of your split-level home and decide the shutter design type that fits. The board-and-batten design, in particular, has a widespread appeal that will look good on any home exterior. If you can’t decide on a shutter type, a short consultation with an architect or home designer might be in order. When people look at the exterior of a split-level home, or any home for that matter, they expect some sense of symmetry and balance among its elements.

I’ve worked with other contractors, and this was one of the better experiences that I have had. I highly recommend this team to anyone who is looking for a high-quality remodel. A smart way to increase the amount of natural light in a split-level home without having to place large windows like bay windows or dormers is to add in some skylights. While they don’t add physical space to a split-level, the natural light let in by skylights can make the home feel more spacious and airy.
Kitchen Addition
Another easy expansion is to “raise the roof.” Unless you’re thinking of dormers — and even that can be a visual fiasco — do NOT add a level to a split level. One of the characteristics of a split-level home that most share is that they’re built with an attached garage. This can lead to expanding the footprint of the home by adding a one or two-car garage. If space isn’t limited and the budget allows, a three-car garage can be part of the plan. From start to finish I had a pleasant experience working with this company and their team.

Whereas, with split-level homes, there’s usually a one-story section that connects to a two-story section instead of being right on top of each other. The plush, velvet couch, combined with plenty of blue pillows gives this room a very cozy feel. Courtesy of houzz.comA big part of the conversation pit’s appeal is its coziness. Pillows will help your space feel more inviting, and it’ll also upgrade your seating game ten-fold. Conversation pits used to be out of style, but they’ve recently come back into fashion. So, in order to make yourself the perfect modern conversation pit, you’re going to need a couple of essentials.
We hired Element Home Remodeling to remodel our rusty kitchen and bathroom. They did a very good job we are all enjoying our new kitchen and bathroom and most important the new plumbing system. It is a refreshing change to not have to call a plumber every other week. I had a very good experience with Element Home Remodeling Contractors. An addition to your split-level home can be a costly endeavor to take on, and some of them can take several weeks to complete too. However, there are many remodeling projects you can take on for a split-level home that will have a major positive impact on the home’s curb appeal and its functionality, too.

The associations that we belong to promote ethical standards and excellence in the remodeling industry. We strongly support continuing education and industry specific certifications. Our search for a home renovation contractor began about six months ago.We met with a couple of renovation contractor companies. They provided excellent construction service and did very good work. Thumbs up to Element Home Remodeling for the excellent customer service and their quality of work. I had a great experience with Element Home Remodeling and their entire team, when my wife and I moved into our new home in San Jose at the end of last year....
I am now happy to invite people to stay over and no longer have to apologise for the condition of the room. The remodeling team of designers and builders have created a guest unit that far exceeds my expectations. I'm amazed at how much more storage space there is and yet the room looks so much bigger. Dave, the home remodeling project manager was available at all times during the project and his ideas and input were invaluable. We started to have many issues with the bathroom plumbing in the past year and knew that we would need to replace the plumbing soon.
